Easy Knitted Earflap Hat

This hat was inspired by my son. He needed a new winter hat since he’d outgrown his old one. After going through several different styles (beanie, roll brim etc), my son settled on an earflap hat. I made several prototypes, adjusting the pattern as I worked to come up with this final version that looks and fits great.

The pattern uses the following stitches and is appropriate for beginners:

  • cast on, knit, purl, kfb increase, k2tog decrease
  • working with stitch holders
  • mattress stitch
  • single crochet, slip stitch

I used a self-striping variegated yarn to produce the stripes. The hat is worked flat on straight needles and seamed with mattress stitch to create an invisible close at the back. An easy project for beginners.

The crochet edge is optional, but gives the hat a smooth finish.
